DASNIYA SOMMER

Since 2006, Dasniya Sommer has been teaching and studying the Japanese rope technique ‘Shibari’. In her performances, she combines this former samurai tradition with yoga and ballet. These bodily experiences are strongly influenced by her philosophical training in the fields of aesthetics and gender studies. Dasniya received her dance training in Berlin and New York, and recently staged Shibari in the opera Parsifal, with Roméo Castellucci at De Munt La Monnaie in Brussels. Her long-term collaboration with choreographer Frances d’Ath focuses on the structural aspects of tying and on rope improvisation systems.
