Svetlana Slapšak

Svetlana Slapšak is a literary historian, anthropologist, classical philologist, and writer. She received her BA, MA, and PhD from the Department of Ancient Studies at the Faculty of Arts in Belgrade. She co-edited the satirical newspaper Frontisterion, which was banned from the very first issue, and cost her her passport for several years. She lectured at many Yugoslavian, European and American universities; at the Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis in Ljubljana, she taught anthropology of the ancient world, gender studies and Balkan studies; she was also its dean. She has published over fifty books and collections, over four hundred scientific studies and over one thousand essays, as well as numerous translations: from Ancient and Modern Greek, Latin, French, English and Slovenian to Serbian; and from Ancient Greek to Slovenian. She wrote columns for Književne reči, Teleks and Vreme, and has been publishing them in Večer for years. She is a great fighter for freedom of speech and participated in campaigns for refugees in Slovenia; she and her husband sheltered many intellectuals. As part of the 1000 PeaceWomen movement, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
