The Burlesque Hour: The Provocation

The Australian Company Finucane & Smith create intimate theatrical spectacles that mine old style
entertainment genres including cabaret, burlesque, variety, silent film, vaudeville, and the gothic, to
create indelible images of gender, violence, power and desire. This one-day workshop is aimed at investigating
provocations, indeed, these artists provoke by addressing issues of submission and freedom,
gender and sexuality, power/authority and lust.
Azaria Universe, Yumi Umiumare and Maude Davey will transport participants into the world of circus,
butoh, melodrama and character drama, winking, as well as masculinity and femininity, to encourage
them to research the possibilities of incorporating provocation into their creativity as well as their lives.
Participants should bring warm clothes in which they can move easily, hula hoops, various props and
costumes (nothing too precious as the group may use it too). Participants may also bring any poem they
have written on the subject of provocation (English translation will be required).
