DJ IPEK

It all happened by fate, or kismet as they say in Turkish.
Six years ago sociology student Ipek Ipekcioglu was asked to replace a Turkish
DJ at the (in)famous queer party at Berlin’s Club SO36. Equipped with a vast
collection of Turkish and Arabic tapes, her first night in front of a mixing
table and hundreds of night-clubbers turned out to be an absolute success… and
the beginning of a career.
In the following years, DJ IPEK developed the new wave on the house music scene
popularised by artists like Khaled, Dana International, and Tarkan. Her
enticing mix of oriental dance-floor sounds, amalgamated with house and techno
and spiced with queer classics, created an exquisite atmosphere which clearly
distinguished her style from similar attempts in the world-ethno music scene.
DJ IPEK has become one of the central agents in the emergence and continuation
of the Berlin cult club-night Gayhane-HomOriental-Dancefloor at Club SO36.
Gayhane is the ultimate night out for various sub-cultures, ranging from the
gay and lesbian scene to the different immigrant communities in Berlin.
