Man With a Movie Camera: The Global Remake

This is a unique documentation of daily activities from myriad points of view, uploaded from a variety of sources by the general public. Bard asked the contributors to respond to Vertov’s film script ‘The Man With a Movie Camera’, chosen because of his intentions as a filmmaker to document daily activities. The uploads were processed by software that specifically archived, sequenced and streamed the work to create a film.

This film, subtitled ‘An Excerpt From the Diary of a Cameraman’, traces a day unfolding from sunrise to sunset and incorporating footage shot in a number of cities. For the remake, Vertov's archive becomes the database, three cities translate to the world, the cameraman is everyone and the camera ranges from mobile phones to HD video. In creating the database version Vertov’s experiment marches into the 21st century raising issues about the nature of media production/distribution in the age of YouTube. (Predrag Pajdić)
