Roundtable about community-oriented (participatory) artistic practices
The City of Women is organising an event in two parts dedicated to an international exchange of community-oriented (participatory) artistic practices. It will take place on Wednesday, 24 May 2023, at Španski borci in Ljubljana.
In the first part, which will be closed to the public, the participants of earlier and current artistic projects of the City of Women will share their experiences. The projects included are The Politics of Touch, Decoding Resilience, Women on Women, Everything is Alright, and Performing Gender – Dancing in Your Shoes.
In the second part, which will be open to the public, producers of community-building creative projects from different organisations will discuss both the challenges and joys of artistic co-creation, drawing on specific examples from the work of their respective organisations. They will also address any potential questions and dilemmas expressed by the participants of the City of Women community-oriented artistic projects.
The panel will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. The panellists are Alma Selimović (Zavod Bunker, Ljubljana), Hannah Robertshaw and Kirsty Redhead (YorkshireDance, Leeds), and Sophie Hope (Birkbeck, University of London). The event, moderated by Tea Hvala, will be held in English, and will conclude with an open discussion. Anyone interested in community-building or participatory processes is kindly invited to join the event and conversation: from professional artists to those with no artistic experiences, from the coordinators to the producers of artistic processes, from art critics to theoreticians with an “outside” perspective on co-creative practices.
During the event, the new handbook Kako z umetnostjo raziskovati razmerja moči med spoli? (English title: Explore Your Powers through Art) will be available for purchase. The price of the printed version in 10 euros. The handbook came about because we wanted to create a new, educational tool to help youth workers use art to explore power dynamics between genders. Its purpose is to take a closer look at concepts having to do with social power, emancipation, and forming gender identities.
On the same day, the venue of Španski borci will host the exhibition Decoding Resilience (Samar Zughool, Behnaz Aliesfahanipour, Safa Saad, Sammar Al Kerawe) and will display the memorial canvas Erased Gazes of the Politics of Touch artistic collective (Aber Al Gendy, selma banich, Ana Lora, Ivana Lukić, Slavica Đuričić, and Mirjana Učakar).
