Short Film Programme

Selecting films around the programme subject of Between Past and Present offers numerous thrilling paths and possibilities for a curator. To name just a few options, one could choose personal stories dealing with an individual’s intimate ties and burdens associated to the past, or focus on larger issues, historical heritages and legacies, both social, political, cultural; the list of subjects that can relate to Past and Present is countless.

Whilst considering a film selection that would best embrace idiosyncratic ideas and artistic preferences and that in one form or another relate to the almost limitless topic, the guiding principle was to primarily focus on young talents and directors. With two feature films and a number of short films, the programme is predicated towards first and second-time filmmakers. The directors selected are exploring the frontiers of narrative and visual form and prove to be new and distinctive cinematic voices. Besides some obvious common characteristics, what ties these filmmakers together is the creation of haunting, beautiful, yet complex portraits and perspectives on the universal relationship between a woman and her past.

Some films are rather literal in their dealing with the topic, others ventured into more intimate and subtle forms of expression, offering just a few perspectives out of many in contemplating the Past and the Present.
