Stopped Ball

An image – movement, an image – moment. Stopped ball. According to Deleuze, the images of thoughts
of ten take f orm: anyway, we all know that … although we aren’t fully aware of it. We are all supposed
to know that in Bahrain - the smallest and one of the richest Arab stat es – women were given the vote
as late as 1999. But – are we aware of it? And there’s more to it: although today a great many Bahraini
women are keen footballers, a women’s spor ts event incited a flood of protests by Islamic extremists as
recently as 1994. Waheeda Malullah’s »action and painting« installation is a thought, t aken through
a photograph and transferred to space. Despit e the fact that Malullah’s wor ks usually addresses the
changes in women’s roles in contempor ary Islamic societies, this ins tallation’s (visual) impression t akes
us closer to the ver y essence of the crisis induced by fundament alism. According to Slavoj Žižek, the
fundament alists - due to exaggerated belief and materialization of »holy e vents«, actually stop believing;
they lose their faith because they believe that it is for real, rather than an article or manifestation
of f aith. Under such circumstances, the faith as such is indeed a lot more similar to the modern def inition
of a newly generated thought which can also be the act of creation. In order to live in a less violent
world, more tolerant of difference, the traditional image of thought, relat ed to the Western discourse of
morals and that which is universally good, will have to be replaced by a new mindset reflected through
dif ferent manner of thinking – about ourselves, our environment, and the things we do…

The exhibition will be open every day between 7 pm and midnight from 7th to 14th October.
