Weapon / Natality

The performance Weapon/Natality re-examines
the paradoxical implications of meanings resulting from two confronted
terms, which address concrete questions related to demographic policy
in Chile, the native country of Alejandra Herrera Silva.
She draws upon the wider context emerging as a confrontation between
the negative demographic trends, on the one hand, and political
priorities, on the other, in order to comment on the future of the
country. She symbolically places the position of being a man in the
service of the state/nation versus that of being a woman in the same
service in order to portray the contrasting poles of engendered
stereotypical images of “the good warrior” and “the good mother”. She
traverses from the social to the individual level while exploring
relationships between one and the other and posing the autonomy of the
subject, body, and freedom as a problem. Mara Vujić
